Yesterday I participated in the count on Anne Swaim’s team. We covered Lake Mahopac and the surrounding areas. In spite of unseasonably warm weather, we had to work hard to find birds. There was good DUCKAGE on Lake Mahopac! A raft of over 1000 Ring-necked ducks along with other RNDU’s found in the circle brought us to an all-time high count. Also, we found 50 Common Goldeneyes some of whom were displaying males throwing their heads back. I was happy that the Northern Shrike I found a few days ago was still at Glynwood. The compilation dinner was fun! There were several longstanding members who talked about the great changes in species over the years. For example, Evening Grosbeak was a common occurrence for the first 50 years and now is a rare bird alert. Since I focused on counting, I left my camera home.
